Nokia “kitchen mate” is a coaching device that gives realtime feedback about the impact of food on daily goals.

Automatic recognition through weighing and visual scanning enable a comfortably easy tracking of calorie intake.
With the data from the Nokia ecosystem, tailored recipes can be generated and guidance be provided.

Finding the niche

Nokia digital is already a major player in the digital health market with products like activity trackers, smart watches, smart scales or blood pressure meters for the mainstream users.

Market segments like nutrition and habit change are highly relevant to a large target group and a great extension of Nokia’s existing product range, making use of the existing product ecosystem.

More than 2 in 3 adults (70.2 percent) were consideredto be overweight or have obesity [US; 2014].

It‘s hard to start new behaviors but even more to sustain over time!

Tracking apps are annoying to use.

People are losing interest after a few months of dieting, falling back to old habits

Prototyping the UX

A scale model and some After Effects post production allowed me quickly prototype the interaction with the physical device.
This is a video of the final iteration:

Three individual scale pebbles are connected via bluetooth with the main device. This allows for maximum flexibility in size of what is to be weighed. Food can be automatically logged through weight and visual recognition. Interaction happens on the display on top or through voice commands.

Several different users can be identified through face recognition. This allows each individual  to track and log food into their own personal diary.

The sideways facing camera recognizes food either through visual appearance or by scanning barcodes.

Users are educated about how food impacts their diet and daily goals through realtime visual feedback on the device.

Automatically generated for each individual can be accessed through the interface or by voice command.
Step by step guidance makes it easy to achieve every desired dish comfortably.

Seamless ecosystem integration.

“Kitchen mate” utilizes the data gathered from other products of the Nokia ecosystem to generate tailored recipes. The user is educated through visual realtime feedback on the impact of the food he or she is about to consume. Last but not least, “kitchen mate” makes foodtracking at home comfortably easy.
